The humble pub has undergone countless transformations to get to its current guise. Moving away from the musty, dimly-lit rooms of old, pubs are now much more open and sociable places. The fustiness typically associated with pubs has gone out the window. More pubs than ever are establishing themselves as welcoming destinations – as opposed to murky boltholes.

So with this considered, what is the best way to decorate a modern pub in order to bring it right up to date?

Entertainment

Sitting quietly nursing a warm ale is quickly losing its appeal. Pub regulars opting instead for entertainment in the form of quizzes and pub game machines.

Whilst the nature of entertainment at a pub is generations old, it has become decidedly more modern in recent times. With the advent of smartphones, typical quizzes have been substituted in favour of quiz machines; preventing would-be cheats from surreptitiously Googling the answers.

Food

Food at modern pubs typically now amounts to more than salted peanuts and pork scratchings. With so-called ‘gastropubs’ taking off, modern pubs have realised the market they can tap into by offering food – not to mention the extra money they’ll get from enticing punters to stay in the pub for longer.

All this comes at a cost, however and any pub which offers food will need to ensure the furnishings can accommodate. Sofas don’t make for the ideal furniture to eat on, so they will have to go in favour of a more traditional table and chair combination.

Drinks

Variety is not just the spice of life, but a way of succeeding in business. With numerous pubs having to fend off competition from supermarket lager and a night in front of the TV, ensuring a pub is stocked with the best assortment of drinks is one way to entice people out.

In the world of countless beers, lagers, porters, stouts, IPAs and bitters (as well as infinite flavoured cider, perry, vodkas, whiskey, rum options etc.) having a varied selection is one way of ensuring you alienate no-one. It could also keep punters returning time after time.

In the world of stock images, the owners of a photograph can choose to release the rights to their photograph either on a royalty-free (RF) or on a rights-managed (RMI) basis.

Royalty-free images

Royalty-free means a deal where the buyer does not have to pay each time they use a photo. It is often wrongly assumed that royalty-free images can be used without any cost, but in the majority of cases, the buyer usually pays the owner of the photograph an upfront fee for the rights to produce an image multiple times for a number of separate projects.

The owner might sometimes place a limit on the amount of times a buyer can use the image and charge them extra if they exceed this.

Magazines and newspaper with large circulations rarely use royalty-free stock images, because they are so likely to exceed the production limit. Instead, they often opt to purchase images on a rights-managed basis.

Rights-managed images

Rights-managed (or licensed) images, are images sold with meticulous conditions. The owners of an image may feel the need to place restrictions on the size and usage of the photo.

These images may only be commissioned for use in a certain part of the world or within a certain medium. There may also be a time limit placed on the rights to use it. Buyers may decide to pay more money for exclusive use of the image.

Those selling images on rights-managed basis are still likely to place a limit on how often it can be used.

The use of stock photography has now become so common that many freelance photographers are able to make a decent living out of producing images for stock image suppliers. Whether buying images on a royalty-free or rights-managed basis, these suppliers have become an extremely useful ally for media sources.

If you’re involved in the production and design of fine art or other creative products, you won’t need to be told much about how useful adhesives are. You also may not know that when you’re having problems involving adhesives, you can get a lot of help when you need it. There are many different classes of adhesive and multiple options available when you need them.

Fine art and adhesives- Forming a bond that lasts forever

The most accurate description for the requirements of fine artists regarding their adhesives is “reliable”. The materials and design elements being bonded are often one of a kind, and any sort of damage can be a serious issue, perhaps even wasting months or years of work. This sort of cost isn’t really possible to estimate, even on a commission job.

The needs of fine art production in relation to adhesives are very demanding. If you’re working with glass, for example, you need a particularly trustworthy type of adhesive. Some types of cyanoacrylate adhesive are OK, but a UV light curable adhesives are the common industrial adhesives used in glassware. If you’re working with wood or metal, you may need a structural adhesive or anaerobic adhesives, or in some cases both.

The core issues in fine art production are:

Durability- You know how your materials behave. You need an adhesive which is sympathetic to the materials and will behave well itself.

Cost- Adhesives aren’t expensive, but in complex assembly work, particularly on a schedule, you need to be able to time the curing process for each bond, and that can involve significant costs.

Assembly issues- Adhesives can provide some very useful options for improving assembly of fine artwork. Joining structural pieces with adhesives early in the assembly process, for example, can make the rest of the job a lot simpler.

Materials- If you’re bonding heterogeneous materials like metal and glass, you may need specialized adhesive.

Mass- High stresses can be placed on bonds, and if you’re working with heavy materials, your adhesive will need to take the load.

Production volumes- If you’re creating a series of artworks, you’ll need to consider all the above issues in terms of your production run.

Playing safe with your artworks- How to get help when you need it

As all artists and creative people know only too well, you may not get a second shot at making an artwork if you make a mistake. The safest and definitely best practice approach is to check out your adhesives in advance, and to test the materials for bonding before committing to actual assembly work.

The stages are:

Test the materials with a test bond to make sure that application and the bond itself are OK. This is a particularly reliable way of staying out of trouble and avoiding the horrible “disassemble and try again” scenario.

If you’re not happy with the result, or the bond isn’t working, you can check with the adhesive manufacturers. This is a help line with a difference- You can explain the technical aspects to people that will understand the issues, and get technical support that will deal with the problems systematically.

You may need an epoxy instead of a cyanoacrylate, or a UV curable adhesive instead of an anaerobic, but you’ll get the help you need, when you need it.

If you are in the market for a new camera, then you can be excused for being a little confused. There is a huge choice of digital cameras available for all levels of expertise and budgets, which can make it hard to decide what is right for you. Even the terminology can give you a headache and if you are not technologically minded, this can make it even more difficult. But buying a new camera is actually an exercise in common sense. Here are a few tips to help you make the right decision.

What are you going to use it for?

This is the biggest factor you need to determine before spending your hard-earned cash on a new camera. If it is just simple family photos you are going to be taking, then a basic point-and-shoot is probably going to do the job. But if you plan on taking photos of your kids playing sport then a digital SLR with the ability to use a variety of lenses is going to be better.

What will you do with the images?

It is also important to think what you are going to be doing with the images. This is where a basic understanding of megapixels will come in handy. As a general rule, the more megapixels a camera has, the better the quality image. So if all you plan on doing is emailing pictures and uploading them to internet, then anything around 8 to 12 megapixels is going to be just fine, while also giving you some scope to produce prints later. If it is great prints you are after them you will want a camera with a little more grunt – anything around 14 megapixels or above is going to give you good-sized prints of very good quality.

LCD screens and automatic settings

For novice photographers, a range of automatic settings is going to be very handy. This means that all you need to do is put the camera on the appropriate setting – such as landscape for outdoors, portrait for party pictures or macro for taking close up images of such things as flowers – and let the technology do the rest. Just remember to make sure you understand when to use each setting to achieve the best results. When it comes to LCD screens, bigger is best. Look for a camera that has the biggest possible screen, which will make taking photos, viewing images and altering camera settings much easier.

Don’t be scared to shop around

Once you start looking for a camera, it becomes apparent that the choice can be overwhelming. This is actually a good thing because competition means lower prices. If you have decided that a 14 megapixel point-and-shoot is best for you, then do the rounds of the local retailers to get a feel for what is available in your budget. Do some research online as well because as is most often the case, you do get what you pay for. Still confused? Then ask an expert for advice – a good camera salesman should be able to point you in the right direction.

As an employer, this is one of the most important events you will hold for your staff each year. We’ve all been to a Staff Christmas Party that was awkward and disappointing, and this needs to be avoided at all costs!

This is a time to celebrate your achievements from the year and toast to a new one. It is important to end the year on a high note so that everyone leaves content to return in the New Year. Here are some tips that will help you make sure your end-of-year staff function is an absolute success.

1. Ask staff what they want.

Where at all possible, staff input is essential! Ask your employees what they would like to do and let them have a say in the way the budget for the event is spent.

This will help with two things:

It will mean there is a much greater chance of everyone enjoying themselves, as well as feeling happy to have been included in the planning process.

It will also mean that if their choice of restaurant, or boat or other venue turns out to be a disappointment, it is less likely you will suffer the blame or be forced to deal with any festering staff resentment (unfortunately always a possibility at staff functions).

2. Send out invitations well in advance.

Make sure that you give your colleagues and staff plenty of notice to attend the event: this will show you are taking the planning seriously, help get people excited, and make sure that everyone can attend.

It is also a great idea (if financially possible) to invite partners as well. Getting to know your staff and their partners on a more personal level will help develop stronger working relationships.

3. Show your appreciation.

An effective manager will always show appreciation and give credit whenever it is due, but if there is one time in the year that this is absolutely critical, it’s the end-of-year Christmas celebration.

Aim to do more than an impersonal, generic Christmas card: Gift baskets that have been prepared to suit your budget and requirements will be well received, even more so if you have taken some time to personalise them for each staff member.

4. Create fun.

This doesn’t mean you need to prepare party games (unless you want to). It can be as simple as organizing “Secret Santa” a few weeks in advance and having the presentation of gifts part of the event.

Holding several raffles for Christmas Hampers can also add to the spirit; you can either draw staff names out at random or you can use it to raise money and sell raffle tickets for a cause of your choice.

5. Keep shop-talk to a minimum.

Naturally, when you all know each other from work and it is a work function, avoiding all talk of work will be impossible.

However! Remember the main focus should be on enjoying each other’s company, getting to know one another better and bonding. This will mean that come the New Year, you will all feel excited and happy to work together once again, ready to start the year off with a bang.

Whether you are sending real Christmas cards or just business greeting cards, there are a number of issues to consider before pumping out your messages. Are greeting cards still good for business? Well, just like anything else, they can be, or they could produce the opposite effect. Ultimately, we are looking to build better relationships with our customers and suppliers. Some call this marketing, and others will consider this an appropriate thing to do with those who are supporting your business, and those you are generating revenue from. There are a number of reasons why they can be good for business, and there are a number of ways you can do this. Let’s have a look at those issues and more.

Marketing. Marketing sounds selfish. Relationship building sounds much better. Your motivation should be of the latter. It will greatly influence the way you approach the issue of greeting cards. We are all learning a lot from social media, and the importance of taking care and building proper relationships with those around us. More than marketing, we need to focus on considering others, and choosing the right time to express that.

Electronic Options. E-cards have grown in popularity, but that does not mean they will have effect. If you do not take the same approach as you would to preparing a normal greeting card, you will not make a good impression. The advantage of electronic options is the ability to create interesting videos and animations. Off the shelf options are not always the best option. Selling yourself with your own logo obsession will also have a negative impact.

Strategy. Effort is everything. If you are considering an Xmas card in the future, you should be working on them well before you are sending them. You could be having your own designs and images compiled over the year before you come to need them. Using images of all those moments of success during the year. Condensing them into a specialised standard greeting card, or even an electronic version will not be hard if you have thought ahead. Strategy is all about taking the time to stop and think in advance

Postage. In most countries, postal systems are extremely reliable. That is not the case in some. If you are sending cards overseas, especially to countries with lower public service standards, it is only reasonable to use more expensive international couriers. This could get expensive. You will certainly want to make sure the cards count.

Etiquette. Corporate and genera etiquette will always say the standard and more traditional card is the best. This is not always the case. You should think about the generation of the receiver, relationship, and what they will appreciate the most. Younger generations are more inclined to appreciate a funny and interesting e-card.

Social Responsibility. Whether it is considering the environment, or using charity Christmas cards at Christmas, for example, showing some social concern will always go down well. Helping your community, or helping the earth has almost become a requirement of doing business. Make sure you do this in an intelligent way, and make sure you are really getting the benefit out of that extra giving.

In summary, there is no direct ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer to this question. As in most things in life and business, it is why you are doing something, and how you are doing it that will define the result and importance.

The summer has finally arrived and the nights are warm enough to spend them outside, especially if you live in London, the place in which the long, light evenings invite you to explore some of the capital’s treasures. Below you will find three from the long list of venues:

The Globe Theater

The place is situated on London’s South Bank. It was rebuilt just on the site of the original theatre and it was meant to bring back the experience of Elizabethan times to the contemporary. The audience would be probably lots more civilized and engaged in a play than it used to be in Shakespearian times, but the charm of open-air drama remains the same. People can stand in the pit or book some space on a bench, with the option of hiring a cushion. Watching the actors play is the unforgettable experience as they use their talent to involve the crowd into the story and they even tend to chat with the audience during the whole thing. The summer’s programs hottest highlights include the comedy "Much Ado About Nothing" and "All’s well That Ends Well".

2. Film 4 Summer Screen at Somerset House

In 1547 Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset built the Somerset House. Its grand central courtyard provides peace and quiet just in the heart of the bustle of central London. Currently, the space has become home for the sculptures of giant animal heads, made by the Chinese artist and a recently released political prisonser Ai Weiwei. However, from July 27 until August 7, the whole courtyard will be converted into the enormous open air cinema. The line up includes some "classic and contemporary cinema", as the organizers say. A different film wil be shown every night and they will include the UK premiere of Almodovar’s "The Sky I Live In", "Thelma & Louise" or "The Big Blue".

3. The Science Museum

If it rains, which is not very unusual in London, you may want to visit the Science Museum. London is a mecca of late night lalleries and museums. Children are not allowed inside, which brings a perfect opportunity to enjoy the exhibitions undisturbed, preferably with a glass of wine from the bar. The Science Museum teaches through fun and play as it is allowed to touch, build and dissemble al the displays. As for June’s special exhibition theme, it will be devoted to the science of climate change, accompanied with speed dating, a silent disco and a tour around the museum.

The Notebook Kiss is considered the very best movie kiss in recent history. If you don’t know it yet, the 2004 movie starred Rachael McAdams and Ryan Gosling and it won the MTV Best Kiss Award.

The story is a familiar one. Boy from the wrong side of the tracks meets a rich girl. Her parents object and the two love birds are separated. This time the story unfolds in 1940 in Seabrook Island, South Carolina. At first they are not attracted to each other, but that wouldn’t make a good movie! So their friends kind of push them together and the next thing you know they realize they were meant for each other.

The notebook best kiss award was not won in the beginning of the movie. Nope you had to wait for that special moment. Before the two love birds are separated by the evil parents, Ryan promises Rachel that he will buy a 200 year old house and fix it up for her. I bet home depot loves him.

So now for the big notebook kiss scene. Nope not yet. Rachael gets engaged to a rich lawyer. Which in most cases would be a good thing. But she keeps seeing Ryan’s face whenever she looks at her fiancée.

The one thing you can say for this movie is that there is a lot of notebook kissing going on. Seems that the people down south consider it a hobby, something to be practiced in your spare time. Back to the 200 year old house.

Ryan buys the house. Who cares if he doesn’t have the girl. You still need a place to live….right?

Well, Rachel still loves Ryan but that darn fiancée needs to be handled. We are getting closer to the famous notebook rain kiss. Rachel and Ryan go rowing on a lake. Does any of this make sense to you? Anyway they go rowing on a lake and get into an argument about not writing to each other when they were spit up. Seems Ryan did write to her but her evil mom hid the letters.

At just the perfect climatic moment, rain pouring down, music ramping up, the passionate and now famous notebook rain kiss takes place. Finally got it out of the way. After the kiss they make love all night and order out for pizza.

As far as kisses go I’m not sure this is the best one I’ve ever seen. But it did win the kiss award: Notebook 2004. So who am I to argue with that? So now every teeny bopper wants to watch the video of Notebook The Kiss. Not to be confused with Kiss the rock band that will kiss anything including a notebook.

So if one generation had Dancing In The Rain with Gene Kelly then I guess it would make sense that this generation will have Notebook Kissing In The Rain.

Maybe the Notebook Kiss will turn out to be a classic. The type of movie that kids will keep watching for years to come. Forget about Casablanca….now we have South Carolina.

So there you have it….a movie that you can now rent and watch with your girlfriend. Assuming you can’t get out of it. But you will always have the Notebook Kiss.
