For years Murphy’s Law has been treated as the excuse for all those errors and mistakes that happen in every person’s life. According to the widely known definition, Murphy’s Law says that “If something can go wrong, it will”. However, according to the latest study made by Canadian researchers, the verification and checking procedures can improve structural safety and performance, thus avoiding the “law” application.

Franz Knoll, the Engineer of Nicolet Chartrand Knoll Ltd., based in Montreal, Quebec, explains in his International Journal of Reliability and Safety that the majority of misfortunes that people face are due to a human error, lack of competence, attention or communication. However, humans won’t admit their mistakes easily and that is why they tend to make up all kinds of the external factors responsible for their problems, “Murphy’s Law” included.

Knoll emphasizes that owing to scientific analysis they have proved what stays behind arising problems and errors. Let us take natural phenomena, for example. In most cases the probability of their occurrence can be predicted and quantified. Volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunami and hurricanes have fatal consequence for the native inhabitants because of the human shortcomings. Similarly, when it comes to the construction of buildings and bridges, it is the human failings that are to be blame for the disasters that may happen. According to Knoll, a targeted strategy for the apprehension and correction of human errors is the essence of outtricking the Murphy’s law. As for the construction safety issues, hiring experienced and qualified engineers prevents the risk of making mistakes and as a result makes the Murphy’s law virtually inapplicable.

An important point to remember with social media is that everyone has freedom of speech. Therefore if they have something to voice about your brand they will do so in front of a wide audience. Keeping your reputation intact is therefore vital to protect your brand image.

This is where online reputation management comes into play. You can manage your reputation by actively seeding only positive information about your brand. However another way of ensuring your image is kept positive is via a memorable social media customer experience.

So how can you control reputation management via social media:

Always reply: If your customers believe you are not listening to them they will lose trust in you as a brand. Also, by not answering you risk someone else answering his or her question falsely – tarnishing your reputation further.

Be Proactive: Post regularly on your wall or profile, this demonstrates that you are an active brand and ready to listen to your customers. However make sure the content you post is relevant to your target audience and avoid spamming their news feeds at all costs. Only post what is relevant and interesting.

Reward Fans: Give those who like or follow you something extra for their loyalty. This may be monthly discounts or additional information on new products – anything that will make them feel valued as a customer.

Stand out: Make yourself stand out from the crowd as social media is very crowded! Do something different like an app for smartphone, which coincides with your social media efforts. Creating something engaging and interesting will encourage your followers to spread the word of your page.

Ensuring the customer service you give to those loyal to you goes beyond that of your competitors will control your reputation management.

Many people dream of becoming a manager within their career. It’s often held as a major career milestone, however once offered the position, they may well realise it’s something completely different to what they expected. That’s because there is a wide variety of managerial roles on offer; ranging from managing people, clients, suppliers or even a whole building! That’s why it’s important to understand exactly what the role entails before a) applying for it or b) saying yes to fulfilling it.

There’s one managerial role that a lot of people go for in particularly – account manager jobs. These are highly varied within themselves, so here’s a quick low-down on these jobs. Firstly, account manager jobs can refer either to managing a client account for a company (or usually more than one), or actually managing the accounts (financial) function of a company. Let’s focus on the latter.

There are many certain attributes an accounts manager will need have to in order to excel within this role. Firstly and this one is a bit of a given, you’re going to have to be good with numbers. There’s no beating around the bush – you simply won’t work as well in a financial role if you don’t have a head for numbers.

Secondly, it’s important to have excellent data entry and computer skills, as you’ll spend a fair amount of time working in this area. An attention to detail is a must, as if you’re just one digit off, you could screw up a company’s entire financial predictions or statements. Having an aptitude for organisation helps as well, as you’ll not only have to manage the company’s accounts, but likely a team of staff, too.

Let’s move on to your day-to-day activities. Well, if you’re managing a team, you’ll need to keep them motivated, productive and happy. If you’re dealing with external clients or suppliers, you may well have to make a phone call or two, or perhaps spend a bit of time replying to emails. You’ll be updating records, making sure invoices are processed properly and creating reports for your senior officials.

It’s a varied, exciting role, but if you don’t have the right skills, you might not enjoy it as much. Consider this before applying for account manager jobs.

One of the reasons that engineering jobs are so popular around the world is the job satisfaction that they provide. Many engineers get a real kick out of knowing that they played a key part in the construction of something new.

Engineering jobs are arguably important no matter what level of work is involved, but those at the very top have a chance to affect the world forever.

This article lists some examples of some famous engineers and details how they left their mark on the world.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel

Isambard Kingdom Brunel was a British civil engineer who helped to build bridges and dockyards but is famous for playing a major role in the construction of the first British railway. Before that, he also worked as an engineer on the Thames Tunnel, which was the first major river tunnel ever built.

George Stephenson

George Stephenson was another British engineer born in Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s time who became famous for his work on the railway. Stephenson designed a powerful locomotive named Rocket, which was one of the most advanced trains of his time. He went on to build the first public railway line in the world to use steam locomotives, thus earning his nickname as the “Father of Railways.”

Thomas Telford

Thomas Telford was known for his brilliance in a variety of structures including roads, bridges, churches and canals. He was responsible for the construction of the St Katherine Docks, the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal and a fair chunk of the A5 from London to Holyhead. He is widely regarded as the best Scottish engineer to have ever lived and even had the Shropshire town named in his honour.

Present day engineers with great minds and high ambitions can change the world just like these great men did and that is part of the attraction to so many engineers across the UK.

Vinyl labels are one of the most commonly used labels because they are cheap and easy to use.

They have a whole range of uses and, although it may not seem immediately obvious to the naked eye, vinyl labels are probably seen every single day either in a workplace or a retail environment.

This article explores some of the most popular uses for vinyl labels.

Name tags

Many of those in charge of those terribly awkward situations where a large group of people are meeting for the first time choose to bust out the vinyl labels in order to make remembering each others names easier.

Although many adults feel a little stupid having to write their own name and stick it on themselves, it can prove massively useful and time-saving to use vinyl labels as temporary name tags in these situations.

These name tags are often used on office equipment such as draws or filing cabinets to make remembering where to put things easier as well.

Warning signs

Most workplaces need warning signs stuck onto walls or doors for health and safety reasons. In these situations, vinyl labels are again the label of choice because they are so easy to add and remove. Many employers choose to bulk buy such labels in order to save money.

Packages

Companies sending a lot of products out to customers in the post make good use of vinyl labels. Rather than hand write addresses on parcels, many companies find they can save time by printing them onto vinyl labels using special computer software. This can save a wealth of time for large companies utilising e-commerce and eliminates the issue of the post office finding hand writing illegible.

Although they may seem like an unimportant product, the vinyl label business is larger than many people would expect. It’s likely that thousands if not millions of vinyl labels are utilised every day and chances are that everyone will be thankful for their existence in the near future.

Over the past few years, courtesy of some interesting investigative techniques, the public has feasted on the fortunes and follies of brands ranging from Eurostar, FIFA, Dior and the FA – to name but a few and in every case at least one senior figure at each brand found themselves facing ‘career disappointment’.

No brand – or individual – has ever emerged from intense media scrutiny financially better off; not only has significant reputation damage been done, the remedial costs are explosive.

So what should companies consider for their media crisis plans…

1. Lack of awareness. All too often companies forget to look at where they may be exposed – this can range from lack of provision in managing staff’s social media presence, being unaware of the types of media exposure a major marketing campaign could bring them or simply talking carelessly

2. Lack of planning. Of the very few companies that have an emergency media plan, even fewer have either tested it or updated it recently. The very worst situation is to have invested in the planning but then fail to advise key staff or not get full management buy-in – the result is invariably chaos and mixed messaging

3. ‘The buck stops here’. Agree the chain of command in advance with everyone along with a plan of action. The very worst example we witnessed was when a national office put everything in place only for the Group CEO – who was based in another territory and was unaware of the plans – to fly in and start issuing counter-instructions. People who were perfectly capable of managing the issues froze as they were afraid to flout senior directions. The upshot was a bad situation getting much worse

4. Get the right spokespeople, dressed in the right way, saying the right things. It may be that the most senior manager wants to be the person to go on camera but it could be that they aren’t the right individual. Carefully select the best person to talk about each topic and invest in their on-going media training

5. Use technology. When was the last time you had your office checked for bugs? It may sound fanciful but, much to the client’s horror, we have found them. Additionally, is your Comms team on top of all the tools you could be using? These days options range from anti-recording devices to pre-prepared microsites or hotlines

6. Perfect harmony. You don’t need politics on top of a crisis so ensure people understand the chain of command and that any external suppliers know they are expected to liaise with internal and external teams. We strongly recommend getting your PRs and lawyers together and discussing how you want them to collaborate well in advance of any issues

Crisis media management always sounds dramatic and expensive – and facing a crisis unplanned can be. However, in truth, the planning stage is pretty straightforward and could well be the best investment you have made for your brand – and yourself.

Among the array of tests you’re likely to encounter in the job seeking process, the least understood are the psychometric aptitude, ability and personality tests. These generally consist of multiple choice questions that are given under exam conditions and results are taken from these tests to be compared to a control group so that employers can make judgments about your abilities.

These tests can appear anywhere in the recruitment process and can be taken either in person or online. A variety of employers use these tests to whittle down the amount of applications they receive and to ensure that the correct candidate is selected.

What do they show?

These formal tests are designed to test your cognitive and reasoning capability under stress. The stress element comes from the “exam” nature of the tests, the limited amount of time to complete them and the lack of outside resources while the test is in progress. The most common of these tests are;

- Verbal Tests – Verbal reasoning and analysis.

- Numerical – Analysis and reasoning with numeral data and sequential questions.

- Spatial Reasoning – These test your sense of logic and visual thinking skills.

- Job Specific Tests - Computer programming, mechanics, Data checking etc., generally dependent on the position itself.

- Personality Questionnaires – Indicators of your personality type.

The results from these tests will produce raw scores for the employer which can then be compared to the required criteria for performance. These scores tell your employer an array of information about yourself. For instance, you may have a certain ability which is better than 80% of other applicants, showing sufficient competence to carry out required job practices. The tests are structured so that very few applicants are able to complete the entirety of the exam and the questions will increase with difficultly as the test goes on – this is to simulate a stressful environment and reward those able to think quickly on their feet.

What Type of Employers use these Tests?

Over 75% of the Times top 100 companies in the UK use these tests in the recruitment process. This includes employers in most industries – from creative roles all the way through to engineering jobs and other specialized careers. Jobs that naturally have a high amount of competition will generally have these tests in place to lessen the number of candidates and ensure high caliber people are selected.

How can I Prepare?

- Practice

This is the best and foremost method of preparation you should use to gain better results in psychometric tests. If you become familiar with the style and format of the exams then you will be able to focus your attention on the questions themselves. Practicing numerous times enables you to learn from mistakes you make and hopefully not to make them again.

- Know the Test

When you receive the initial invitation to take part in a test, the letter or email will normally tell you which publisher created the test. If not, you’re within your rights to ring up and ask the recruiter. Once you know the publisher you can see out practice papers and the standard format used.

- Know When to Move On

As you will be marked on all the questions you have completed, its best to move on from a question you don’t understand rather than waste precious time on it. If you manage to complete all the questions then you can always go back to it.

- Understand the Instructions

If you’re taking the test online you will be presented with the instructions before you begin the actual timed questions. The paper versions of the test normally have an invigilator that reads out the instructions to you. Ensure you understand how to correctly answer the questions and the correct place to write the answer. Note down the time you have to complete the time and keep an eye on the clock.

Remember that if you don’t understand the instructions you can politely ask for them to be explained to you.

Are they worth it?

Many people treat the idea of psychometrics with bemusement and insecurity. The idea of basing your entire skill set on a short exam taken on a day you may not be performing at your best could seem absurd, but employers and employment agencies regard them as useful. Do not feel the need to panic, an employer’s entire judgment will not be made on the test results alone, they are often used in conjunction with interviews and you are well within your rights to ask the employer what they are testing you for and whether or not you can discuss your results afterwards.

Business relocation can alter a good business to a great business. As we all know that the key towards successful business relocation is flexibility. Thus, to maintain flexibility you can get in touch with any agencies that can provide good business relocation services. You also need to choose such an agency so that your move is flexible and stress-free.

There are several small business organisations that seem to have missed out on relocating as they might lose out potential customers. But, let me tell you that a small business benefits much more from relocation than large scale industries. This is because:

You might relocate your business in such a location so that it is easier for your clients to access
You can also impress new customers by shifting to a particular location
It can also become a convenient location for new as well as old customers

Thus, these are the reasons behind why relocating small business organisations is easier than large scale organisations.

An interim executive can provide firms with vital experience and skills if a key team member is forced to take a leave of absence.

There are all manner of reasons why employees may need to take an extended period of time off work – family responsibilities, health or grieving for example – and the difficulty for bosses is that they tend to happen out of the blue, making them very tricky to plan for. If a staff member is taken ill or loses a close relative, it is likely that they will not have had much time to prepare for their absence.

But even though their time off is completely valid, it does not change the fact that the business wheels keep on turning. If you are lucky then it will happen during a quiet period for the company, but there is every chance that your firm will be involved in some form of project that needs to be completed no matter what.

The interim

With the help of an interim, whichever initiative you are working on could continue to move ahead in spite of the unexpected absence of a team member. While it is vital that the company spends time selecting a candidate that can bring a degree of professionalism and skill to the table, the support should not stop at the recruitment stage.

Individuals who take on such roles can be a huge benefit for your business but especially if they are provided with the right backing to make sure the change in personnel is as seamless as possible.

The absentee

As well as focusing on getting the job done, it is vital to remember the employee who has had to take time off. Speak to them at the beginning of their absence to reassure them and check to see if they want to remain ‘in the loop’ with regards to the project in question.

Sometimes a person may need to be alone with their thoughts or to simply relax without work commitments hanging over them; however, if somebody has been completely cut out of communications it may actually make them worry more. An honest conversation should clarify the situation.
