Sumata Mitra created the Hole-In-The-Wall system developed to promote self-education and critical thinking skills in children.

The name derived from a test Sumata conducted in New Delhi where he placed a computer with high speed internet access and a touch screen into a hole in the wall. The purpose of the test was to see if children on the street would attempt to use it without knowing exactly what it was.

Within eight hours two children approached the screen and began to experiment with it. While the children didn’t have knowledge on how computers worked they quickly caught on to the concept of controlling the action through the touch screen.

By the end of the first day 70 children had come over to use it. From this Sumata determined that children in groups can self-instruct each other. He also understood that entertaining children while educating them is an effective method of teaching.

Sumata’s notion that children can use games to educate themselves has caught on here in the United States and has grown in popularity over the last few years. Children are playing games from kindergarten through high school, and educators are using games to their advantage by providing students with opportunities to learn and entertain.

Here a few games that are entertaining and educational.

Mithril: Incorporates online multiplayer role-playing where users must use mathematical concepts to casts spells.

Dimensionu.com: Features tons of educational games for students ranging from grades k-12. All of the games are math skill oriented and they sell curriculum packs for use in the classroom or home.

Gamestar Mechanic: Allows students to create their own game and developing puzzles and different tasks for other players to complete.

PBS has provided educational programming for years on television, and now they are transitioning into educational gaming. Children can log onto the site and see games featuring their favorite characters from TV.

There is a Curious George game called Piñata Party that teaches children how to speak Spanish. In the process of playing they are also learning how to pronounce words and read in English, how to properly use the mouse, and a number of other skills.

These young children become internet savvy, and as they grow they are able to transition from playing educational games to using the web to research for assignments and create multi-media presentations. High schools across the nation have begun to offer more online course options to prepare students for the next level. The focus on this has grown as more students are pursuing a degree through online school and taking online courses at traditional “brick and mortar” colleges.

It is an exciting time for education with the development of new technologies being molded to teach and entertain. Young people have access to resources like never before and they are encouraged to educate themselves. Soon parents may be encouraging their children to play games instead of turning them off to study.

Growing up in a small town, there wasn’t a lot to do as a family. Assuming the fair wasn’t in town and it was nobody’s birthday, my dad and I would often spend Saturdays in the pool hall together, whiling away the afternoon until the bar crowd started to roll in. My dad was really good at pool, so he spent a lot of time teaching me his tricks to success.

1. Stay calm. This seems like common sense, but it’s really easy to lose your cool when you’re playing a game you can win or lose. Keep your body relaxed so that there isn’t any tension in your shot. Less tension means smoother shots. As the game progresses, don’t stress out about shots you miss. When you stand up to take your next shot, that is the only shot that matters. (Well, that and the next one, but we’ll get to that.)

2. Improve your game by deconstructing your mistakes. If you miss a shot, spend some time thinking about exactly why you missed it and how you could make the same shot work next time.

3. Plan ahead. When you are lining up a shot, think about where the cue ball is going to end up. Will it allow you to easily make another shot? Trace the expected path of your cue ball to ensure the success of not only this shot, but the next one, too.

4. Don’t tilt your head. I know when I started shooting pool, I wanted to tilt my head to the side and line it up with one eye. Then my dad pointed out that then you’re looking at everything sideways! Keeping your head straight provides a clear view of the table.

5. Commit to your shot. You may think you’re done the instant you touch cue to ball, but if you jerk your cue back immediately, it can mess up your shot. Follow through with your stroke and stay where you are until the ball lands in the pocket.

6. Have fun! Have you ever noticed that you perform some tasks better when you aren’t losing your mind trying to get them right? Pool is a game, and if you treat it like a game, you will automatically be more relaxed and more able to focus on the moment.

Can you remember the last time you received a birthday or anniversary gift or even a Christmas present that was something you really wanted? Or do you tend to receive last minute gifts such as a box of chocolates, a bunch of flowers or a gift card? You know, the kinds of gifts that are so general that they don’t really say anything except "Sorry but I was rushed for time and this was the only thing I managed to get".

Are you just as guilty of giving these types of last-minute gifts to your family and friends too? Whilst you can’t control what gifts people give you, you can control what sort of gifts you give to other people. After you start doing this, putting a bit of thought and consideration in to the gifts you buy for other people, you will get a lovely warm glowing feeling inside as you see people’s face light up when they are genuinely given a present that is exactly what they wanted. Instead of giving boring gifts that say nothing, I thought about the types of hobbies and interests that my friends and loved ones had and it is amazing what a little bit of forethought and planning can do!

Buying one of the : Monster High Dolls Clawdeen for my niece, meant the world to her and was much more enthusiastically received than an Amazon gift card. Similarly, buying a Lego Cafe Corner 10182 for my oldest son made him jump for joy because he had another Lego collectible to add to his growing collection of Lego sets.

My parents who love playing board games with their friends, were ecstatic when we gave them a Dixit boardgame for their anniversary. It meant much more to them than a big box of chocolates. Instead of convenient-for-me-to-buy presents, I took the time to think about the people I was buying gifts for. Oh, and more importantly, I bought their presents about a month before their birthdays’ or anniversaries which really freed me up to think carefully and shop around instead of buying things last minute. It meant my loved ones got presents that really made them happy. Why? Because these were gifts they really wanted but did not have. Nowadays, I plan out all my gifts and this starts by putting all important dates on an easy to reference calendar. I shop around a good month before an important event and I usually do a huge online shop just after Christmas has finished!

Crazy? No. It means all the over-priced toys and games will all have reverted to "normal" prices because Christmas is now over and done with for another year. I pick up lots of great presents at bargain prices. This also means I have lots of gifts on hand in case any surprise event comes up or one of my children’s friends has a birthday. It means I can give them an age appropriate gift instead of a boring gift card.

If you have children, especially those who are younger, it is a good idea to have an area near the kitchen so you can keep an eye on them when you are preparing meals. Once they get a little older there are plenty of great things for kids to do in the kitchen that will keep them entertained. As well as teaching them from an early age to help you clean up and unload the Bosch dishwasher, they can learn to cook, make play dough and play sitting up at the kitchen bench. Always supervise kids in the kitchen as it can be a dangerous place, what with the sharp knives and hot surfaces, like the stove top and oven. Many house fires actually start in the kitchen so always make sure your home and contents insurance is kept up to date.

Things For Kids To Do

Cook

Teaching your children to cook can be fun and rewarding. They are never to young to start helping in the kitchen, whether they help you shell peas for dinner, make their own mini pizzas out of muffins or pitta bread or you supervise them cooking the entire evening meal.

Play Dough

Making play dough is easy and your children will have hours of fun. With a simple recipe of flour, salt, oil, food coloring and cream of tartar you can make a safe play dough that is alright for even younger children to use. Make a few different batches in a variety of colors. Store it in the fridge in an air tight container.

Bubble Pictures

Put some water and dish washing liquid in a large tray or glass dish then color it with food coloring. Using a straw blow bubbles in the water and then carefully lay a piece of paper over the bubbles to create bubble pictures.

Drawing

Sit your children up at the bench and give them paper and a variety of different pencils, markers, crayons, pens, pastels and even paint and have them spend time drawing. Give them ideas of what to draw or have them create a story book of different drawings.

Card Making

You can buy card making kits or you can just as easily make your own collection of bits and pieces to make cards. Your children can sit up at the kitchen bench and spread out their pencils and paper and make cards for different occasions. Give them scissors and glue so they can stick on extra decorations like paper, pictures out of magazines, photos, feathers, shells and other small items. Have a collection of stickers they can use too.

Potato Stamps

You can make potato stamps by simply cutting a potato in half, then using a knife cut out a shape into one side of the potato. You will probably have to do this part for them, but once this is done you dip the potato shape into some paint and print pictures onto the paper.

Baking

There are plenty of easy recipes that children can follow themselves. Baking cupcakes is easy and then you can have fun decorating them anyway you wish. Chocolate Crackles are another easy treat as well as Honey Joys.

Reading

While you are cooking dinner is a good time for any children who are in primary school to read their library books or readers to you. Often in the rush of the evening you can forget to do it but you can kill two birds with one stone if they sit in the kitchen and read while you cook.

And there you have it. If you use a little bit of imagination you can come up with even more great things for kids to do in the kitchen.

For model aircraft enthusiasts, a customized trailers is the perfect way to transport expensive, heavy and cumbersome model planes and helicopters into the wide open spaces where they can soar as they are intended to do.

Since serious hobbyists often build and fly highly detailed and painstakingly handmade models, a safe trailer with a gentle ride and room to maneuver inside is essential.

The key to a simple modification project is starting with a good trailer. Since model flying involves carrying unwieldy planes into and out of the structure often, choosing a trailer that comes with a ramp door is a smart idea. A smooth factory suspension will also help protect the valuable models and keep the trailer stable when more than one person is using it as a base of operations in the field. A side door helps make access easier too.

Choosing a trailer that comes with preinstalled lighting might be useful for night flying, but adding an electrical system and generator will likely be a hobbyist’s first upgrade. Planes and repair tools need recharging, and that will require more power than most vehicles can provide.

For a model enthusiast, three customizations are crucial.

First, a large workbench with locking-door storage cabinets underneath may become the permanent residence of the hobby, even when the enclosed trailer is parked at home. A spacious bench allows for preflight checks and repairs. It can even serve as a place to build new planes to add to the collection.

Second, it is a good idea to add enough insulation and ventilation for the climate. In moderate climates, fiberboard panels on the walls may be enough, but colder climates require more efficient and thicker roll insulation that takes away usable space. In warmer locales, ventilation may be very important.

Third, hooks that will securely hold every flying machine are essential. The same specialty hooks that enthusiasts use in stationary locations like garages and work sheds may work fine, but it is also important to find a way to secure the crafts to the hooks if the ride gets bumpy. Plastic or metal ties will work, but reusable clamps and padded clips are more elegant solutions.

A few other nonessential modifications may appeal to model aircraft enthusiasts. Among them could be additional electrical outlets on the outside of the trailer so the generator can be used during overnight flying expeditions to power portable camping devices. Flyers who are interesting in impressing their guests may even want the inside and outside of the trailer painted with custom murals.

A carefully chosen enclosed trailer that already includes some upgraded features makes a great starting point for any trailer customization project. With only a few appropriate additions, the inside of the trailer can be just as nice as any workshop.

For those who enjoy taking their model airplanes and helicopters into the great outdoors, simple attention to a few key details can turn a plain trailer into the perfect choice for even the most adventurous expedition.

From modern city life to African wild life, the themes in Playmobil toy collection cover a wide range of topics. Playmobil toys springs from Germany to reach almost all parts of Europe today and is a favourite for children and adults alike. If you trace the history of the company it goes back to more than a century back, to 1876 when Andreas Brandstätter, a locksmith in Germany, founded a lock and metal fitting company. In the next more than 100 years, it witnessed several changes in the name, ownership, products and headquarters, finally to become the Playmobil, the toy experts, as it is today.

Playmobil has become popular among children of all ages due to many reasons. First and foremost, its products cover any topic that catch the attention of children, be it pirates, farm, wild life, treasure hunters, police, fire rescue and a lot more. From something as exotic as the dragons to something as common as a normal school, there is no end to the categories of toys you would find under Playmobil.

Another reason for the success of Playmobil toys is that it doesn’t come with a pre-set story which gets boring for the children after playing for some time. Playmobil just gives its tiny cute figures and realistically beautiful settings with which the children can make up as many stories as they want. This way it stirs the imagination and creative thinking of the children and thus become their favourite set of toys for a long time.

Playmobil school:
What else could prepare a child for school than a toy school and accompanying accessories? And when that comes from the creativity of the famous Playmobil design team the game becomes great fun as well as a memorable learning experience for children. Using life-like models and themes, the Playmobil school set comes close to a real school and has props and items that children would find in a real school.

Perhaps no other brand would have so much of range and versatility in a single theme. Within the category of school, you’ll find subcategories like classroom, woodshop class, cafeteria, gym, crossing guard, vending machine, school band, families belonging to different races, etc. And categories would comprise hundreds of products like cute little students, lovely moms and dads, crossing guards with lollipops, as well as colourful accessories that suit each section like band instruments, benches and desks, black boards and many more.

These toys are for children above 3 years as they contain tiny parts which might be unsafe for children below 3. For children who are hesitant to go to school and create a fuss every morning, this school collection from Playmobil is ideal for it can tell them how much fun and interesting school could be. It is also an ideal item to introduce the concept of school to children who are about to start their academic life.

Whilst the idea of a pub may - for many - be of a smoky, dimly lit room full of men drinking ale with soil in, the reality couldn’t be further from the truth. Whilst there are a small number of these olde world public houses in operation, the vast many have given themselves a decidedly more modern twist.

From touch screen bar games to electronic jukeboxes and everything else in between, the days of sitting quietly at a table drinking porter have been substituted for what is, essentially, a playground for adults.

Bar games have proven some of the more successful modern additions to a pub, fusing together the desire to test your general knowledge and potentially win big money prizes.

The closest you can get to being on a quiz show whilst down at your local, touch screen games such as this offer great rewards for those who do well, whilst packaging the whole thing up in attractive games which are easy to get to grips with.

Despite it being a new, modern approach to pub gaming, many of these consoles do not start and end with quizzes, as many boast some classic games that have been played in pubs for generations.

With such games as Take Your Pick, Open the Box and Hi/Lo cards, even the most traditional of pubs can bring a little extra life (and even a little extra custom) into their day-today running of the pub without any extra effort or without having to take on dedicated members of staff to compile questions and run the games.

So whilst games machines such as these may prove a surprising addition to the humble pub for many, it is something that is proving popular and with very good reason. At times when pubs and bars can struggle with falling numbers, machines such as these will bring in custom at all times of the day and at any day of the week.

Anyone who is acquainted with a fisherman knows how these individuals love their sport. They can talk for hours about the big catch they made back in ’79 just as if it was yesterday. Anglers go on and on about technique, equipment, weather and water conditions, and even the size of the boat they were in on that infamous day. Some of these sportsmen are not content with merely hitting the open water during the season. They enjoy sporting online when the weather is cold and there are plenty of fishing games for them to enjoy.

There is an abundance of free fishing games online for Web surfers to play. Some of them are quite realistic, capturing all the detail of the actual experience. Fishing games can be found regarding any type of fish and any environment within which to catch them. There are even saltwater fishing games for fishermen who prefer to stay out of the lake or river. Players head out to the deep sea to play shark fishing games and they may even hook a mackerel or a tuna. All they need to do is conduct a quick Web search and a variety of options are at their fingertips.

Free bass fishing games are some of the most popular on the Internet. Not everyone has the skill required to hook a large mouth bass. When they are not out on the lake, anglers should practice by playing a bass fishing game. They will not have to worry about bug bites or sunburn because they can play from the comfort of home. Do not be fooled by the fact that this is not a real experience because the play can get a bit stressful when the gamer is trying to beat the clock or his or her high score.

Some play requires a bit of skill like that needed to excel at the fly fishing games that many sites have. These are often 3D experiences based on the concepts of physics. They are great simulation experiences, allowing the fisherman to get in some realistic practice time at home or in the office. Gamers will appreciate the fly casting dynamics, different environments, and various types of fish included in these games.

Fishing games for kids offer a way for the youngsters to get in on the action. They feature cute characters and have different playing goals geared toward educational purposes. Some require that children capture all fish of the same color and the aim of others is for the larger fish to eat all the smaller ones while avoiding any that are larger than it. There are even puzzle games that require children to catch fish within a certain time. Children learn concepts like sizes, colors, and eye-hand coordination during play.

A laptop, mobile phone, or tablet computer offers ways to play even when on the train or bus. Imagine being able to cast a rod while eating a sandwich in the park. It is all possible thanks to Web technology and the increasing portability of compatible devices. These new advances will blow old-school fisherman away. If they are unable to get to the lake or sea, give them a computer and show them where to find the carp fishing games online. They will be happy as a clam sitting at their desk or in a rocker, reeling in the next big catch.

Sites regularly update their content, so there are always new fishing games to play. Gamers will soon realize that they may not encounter the same one twice, so they should bookmark the sites that contain their favorites. Those who become frustrated with their gaming experience can find plenty of cheats, hints, and codes for all the popular fishing video games. Their friends will think they have become the bass master when really they are cheating. They will breeze through to the championship level with ease while others are still trying to fill their buckets with catch. It is all in good fun though because fishermen tend to exaggerate their tales, don’t they?

When conducting a Web search for something to play, users should make sure the game is compatible with their computers. Some of these use Flash and if a computer is too outdated, it will not be able to run them properly. The best recommendation is to review the system requirements before attempting a download. This will prevent anything from occupying needed space on the computer when it cannot be played. Those with the most outdated equipment may be able to make the case to the family that a new computer purchase is warranted.

Some sites allow gamers to play each other tournament-style. This is a great way for the fisherman to have some competitive fun with friends on a rainy day. As the playing field narrows, the competition heats up and some players place high stakes on a win. If the angler cannot reel in the largest catch in real life, at least he or she can do it on the computer. Friends will be scrambling to beat the high score or they will never hear the end of this tale!

While it seems that the options are endless, the gamer may want to take a logical approach to playing. They can work their way through play by type of fish, technique, or type of water. They can also concentrate on different environments or focus on a certain type of game like timed, skill, or puzzle. This will allow them to better their skills in certain areas they need to improve during the real experience.

Whether the preference is deep sea fishing games, bass fishing games, or others, there are many computer fishing games to play. Using portable devices like smart phones, laptops, and tablet computers, gamers can play anywhere throughout the world. These addicting games may cause players to waste their entire day on the Web so they should ask someone to let them know when it is time for dinner. All of those hours spent playing fishing video games will have them hungry for a nice piece of flounder.

Let's talk some plush toy history. Like we said before it dates back to the early 1800's. Then it became a commercial enterprise around 1880. There was a company in Germany that started to produce and sell plush toys.
Without a doubt the most popular soft plush toys back then were teddy bears and sock puppets. People are drawn towards plush animals for many different reasons.

Plush toys have been popular for a very long time. So it might be interesting to take a look at some of the history behind them. The word “Plush” is of French origin. What plush is exactly is a fabric that has a nap or pile that is very similar to velvet or fustian. Back in the 1830′s when plush animals were invented they made of mohair, but times have changed and so has the material used in plush toys. Today you are more likely to see the plush made from a backing of cotton with silk on top.

It is not unusual for today’s manufacturers of plush to use man made fibers in the construction of plush. It will come to no surprise to any of us that plush is most often used in manufacturing of stuffed animals. Once again we have the French to thank for the Plush Teddy Bear. So I guess they do have some good ideas besides the French Fry!

When looking at designer toys you need not look any further than custom plush toys. They are all the rage with people that are looking for a stuffed toy that is both unusual and a gift that will be kept for a long time. Even though people use the term “stuffed toy” more often than plush they normally mean the same thing.

Plush material on the outside and stuffed on the inside. The stuffing varies according to the size and type of toy. Common stuffing includes: beans, pellets, cotton, and different types of fiber. No matter what the stuffing is made of, a plush toy should always be a soft toy that will be cuddly.

The simple truth is that plush toys are made to look like just about everything under the sun. You can find these soft toys that look like animals, historic figures, Disney characters, or just about anything or anyone you can think of.

The very first stuffed toys are now antiques. Originating back in the 1830′s they were normally dolls for young girls. There was no “man made” material to stuff them with so they used straw.

The most popular stuffed animals are the ones that resemble the Teddy Bear. We will get into the plush teddy bear in detail in just a few minutes. But make no mistake about it, the stuffed bear is the king of the jungle when it comes to plush stuffed toys.

Just like comfort food that make people feel warm and fuzzy on the inside, plush toys have the same affect on some people, especially young people. It is a toy that makes them feel secure.

What you might find of some interest is how the term “stuffed animal” came to be. I’m afraid that the cute baby plush toys you see in the toy stores has nothing to do with it. The term comes from the stuffing of the skin of dead animals that were killed after being hunted. Today of course the term is not really used that much in that context. Today the word taxidermy is used to describe the same thin.

Let’s talk some plush toy history. Like we said before it dates back to the early 1800′s. Then it became a commercial enterprise around 1880. There was a company in Germany that started to produce and sell plush toys.
Without a doubt the most popular soft plush toys back then were teddy bears and sock puppets. People are drawn towards plush animals for many different reasons. There are people that collect small plush toys and big plush toys. They keep them through childhood and give them to their own children when they are old enough to appreciate them. Who has not had a teddy bear or one of the many plush dog toys when they were a child?

Plush toys are often thought of as a gift for important events in a loved one’s lives. When a child graduates from school, any holiday, birthdays, anniversaries or just when you want somebody to have a good day. I can remember when my parents gave me and my brother horse plush toys. We thought they were the greatest toys ever. I dragged that horse around for a few years. It was my “safety blanket”.

So popular are plush toys that large companies make lots of profits from them. You know when Disney, Ty, and Steiff are in the business then the business is big. And if you have walked through a shopping mall lately then you have surely seen the Build A Bear Workshop.

The teddy bear plush toy is the softest of soft. It is stuffed with the softest of cotton and will have baby bottom soft fur on the outside. There is no other plush toy that is as popular as the teddy bear. A lot of people think that puppy plush toys are popular, but they really can’t compare with the king of stuffed animals, the bear.

Just like I did most children around the world will have a plush toy in their room or more likely several scattered around the house. We have all heard of baseball cards becoming collector items just like stamps and coins. It is too bad because it takes the joy out of having these items. It all becomes a financial thing. It is sad that the teddy bear is traveling down this same path.

The Super Bowl for the teddy bear is Valentines’ day. It is given by many men to their girlfriends or wives. And this is a gift that always brings a smile to the ladies faces.

We have President Roosevelt to thank for the teddy bear’s name. Teddy Roosevelt that is. This is how the story goes. In 1902 the President was on a hunting trip with the Governor of Mississippi. Roosevelt joined the Governor and several other men on the expedition. After a while most of them had already shot an animal. Everyone that is except for President Theodore Roosevelt. Fearing that the President would be embarrassed about being the only one that did not succeed at the hunt, the group captured a Black Bear and tied it to a tree. They had the President come over to the tree and told him to shoot the bear.

Roosevelt would not shoot the bear. If nothing else the President was a sportsman and knew that it would not be fair to shoot a bear that was tied to a tree. The whole incident was written up in the newspapers. The story went viral and the bear that was tied to the tree gained the nickname of “Teddy Bear” named after Teddy Roosevelt.

There are now companies that produce collectible bears. These designer plush toys can be found in any toy store or on the internet. Steiff is the largest manufacturer of these types of plush toys. China and Indonesia are where most bears are produced. But is there any more famous teddy bear than the Born In America, Winnie-the-Pooh?

We might ask ourselves how children went from wanting a cute plush bunny and plush dogs to craving rpg games and dungeons and dragons. I’m not sure how that happened but it has. Many kids now a days are not interested in simple toys. Perhaps the only time you can interest them in a simple toy is if it is one of the anime plush toys or one of the Nintendo plush toys. I guess times change and so do games and toys.

When all is said and done, despite the advent of high tech toys, I believe that plush toys will remain a popular gift for young and old. And that plush toys will always be loved by young children.

One of the best things about games is that you get to hang out with your friends and have a good time. But what if your friends don’t think they like the game you want to play? This is pretty common with Role Playing Games – RPG for short – since the stereotype of a Dungeons and Dragons player is pretty grim, all Cheetos and Mountain Dew.

There are a few good ways to introduce them into the world of RPGs. First, if you already play board games with friends, games like Risk, Arkham Horror or Settlers, then the strategy aspects of RPGs might already hold enough appeal. A good gateway game might be D&D Miniatures. It’s a two-player strategy game that has elements of chess, Risk and Magic the Gathering. An added bonus is that in RPGs, you usually use Dungeons and Dragons miniatures as “board” pieces. The minis are inexpensive and very detailed making them easy and fun to use in your game.

If your friends are writers or read fantasy novels, books like “Lord of the Rings”, “Game of Thrones” or Robert Jordan’s “Wheel of Time” series, then a game like D&D will allow them to “live” within a world not unlike what they’ve experienced in the novels. I often describe RPGs as being shared storytelling. That aspect should appeal to your fantasy loving friends.

Finally, if your friends enjoy video games then RPG Games will give them a nice change of pace from sitting in a darkened room holding a controller. The mechanics of RPGs are similar as in video games, but you have to do the math yourself. As in video games, your character has stats and health points and particular skills. For example, playing a game like Fallout3 is not so different from playing D&D.

First impressions matter, so if you’re setting up a little D&D adventure to introduce your friends to the game, make sure you take the time to plan it out. RPGs are so much better with props. D&D props like a torn piece of paper with writing on it or a small bag filled with “gold” coins will really bring the story home. Before you know it, you and your friends will be having a blast.
