The name derived from a test Sumata conducted in New Delhi where he placed a computer with high speed internet access and a touch screen into a hole in the wall. The purpose of the test was to see if children on the street would attempt to use it without knowing exactly what it was.

Within eight hours two children approached the screen and began to experiment with it. While the children didn’t have knowledge on how computers worked they quickly caught on to the concept of controlling the action through the touch screen.

By the end of the first day 70 children had come over to use it. From this Sumata determined that children in groups can self-instruct each other. He also understood that entertaining children while educating them is an effective method of teaching.

Sumata’s notion that children can use games to educate themselves has caught on here in the United States and has grown in popularity over the last few years. Children are playing games from kindergarten through high school, and educators are using games to their advantage by providing students with opportunities to learn and entertain.

Here a few games that are entertaining and educational.

• Mithril: Incorporates online multiplayer role-playing where users must use mathematical concepts to casts spells.
• Dimensionu.com: Features tons of educational games for students ranging from grades k-12. All of the games are math skill oriented and they sell curriculum packs for use in the classroom or home.
• Gamestar Mechanic: Allows students to create their own game and developing puzzles and different tasks for other players to complete.

PBS has provided educational programming for years on television, and now they are transitioning into educational gaming. Children can log onto the site and see games featuring their favorite characters from TV.

There is a Curious George game called Piñata Party that teaches children how to speak Spanish. In the process of playing they are also learning how to pronounce words and read in English, how to properly use the mouse, and a number of other skills.

These young children become internet savvy, and as they grow they are able to transition from playing educational games to using the web to research for assignments and create multi-media presentations. High schools across the nation have begun to offer more online course options to prepare students for the next level. The focus on this has grown as more students are pursuing a degree through online school and taking online courses at traditional “brick and mortar” colleges.

It is an exciting time for education with the development of new technologies being molded to teach and entertain. Young people have access to resources like never before and they are encouraged to educate themselves. 1. Stay calm.  This seems like common sense, but it’s really easy to lose your cool when you’re playing a game you can win or lose.  Keep your body relaxed so that there isn’t any tension in your shot.  Less tension means smoother shots.  As the game progresses, don’t stress out about shots you miss.  When you stand up to take your next shot, that is the only shot that matters.  (Well, that and the next one, but we’ll get to that.)

2. Improve your game by deconstructing your mistakes.  If you miss a shot, spend some time thinking about exactly why you missed it and how you could make the same shot work next time.

3. Plan ahead.  When you are lining up a shot, think about where the cue ball is going to end up.  Will it allow you to easily make another shot?  Trace the expected path of your cue ball to ensure the success of not only this shot, but the next one, too.

4. Don’t tilt your head.  I know when I started shooting pool, I wanted to tilt my head to the side and line it up with one eye.  Then my dad pointed out that then you’re looking at everything sideways!  Keeping your head straight provides a clear view of the table.

5. Commit to your shot.  You may think you’re done the instant you touch cue to ball, but if you jerk your cue back immediately, it can mess up your shot.  Follow through with your stroke and stay where you are until the ball lands in the pocket.

6. Have fun!  Have you ever noticed that you perform some tasks better when you aren’t losing your mind trying to get them right?  Pool is a game, and if you treat it like a game, you will automatically be more relaxed and more able to focus on the moment.

Are you just as guilty of giving these types of last-minute gifts to your family and friends too? Instead of convenient-for-me-to-buy presents, I took the time to think about the people I was buying gifts for. Oh, and more importantly, I bought their presents about a month before their birthdays’ or anniversaries which really freed me up to think carefully and shop around instead of buying things last minute. It meant my loved ones got presents that really made them happy. Why? Because these were gifts they really wanted but did not have. Nowadays, I plan out all my gifts and this starts by putting all important dates on an easy to reference calendar. I shop around a good month before an important event and I usually do a huge online shop just after Christmas has finished!

Crazy? No. It means all the over-priced toys and games will all have reverted to "normal" prices because Christmas is now over and done with for another year. I pick up lots of great presents at bargain prices. This also means I have lots of gifts on hand in case any surprise event comes up or one of my children’s friends has a birthday. Cook

Teaching your children to cook can be fun and rewarding. They are never to young to start helping in the kitchen, whether they help you shell peas for dinner, make their own mini pizzas out of muffins or pitta bread or you supervise them cooking the entire evening meal.

Play Dough

Making play dough is easy and your children will have hours of fun. With a simple recipe of flour, salt, oil, food coloring and cream of tartar you can make a safe play dough that is alright for even younger children to use. Make a few different batches in a variety of colors. Store it in the fridge in an air tight container.

Bubble Pictures

Put some water and dish washing liquid in a large tray or glass dish then color it with food coloring. Using a straw blow bubbles in the water and then carefully lay a piece of paper over the bubbles to create bubble pictures.

Drawing

Sit your children up at the bench and give them paper and a variety of different pencils, markers, crayons, pens, pastels and even paint and have them spend time drawing. Give them ideas of what to draw or have them create a story book of different drawings.

Card Making

You can buy card making kits or you can just as easily make your own collection of bits and pieces to make cards. Your children can sit up at the kitchen bench and spread out their pencils and paper and make cards for different occasions. Give them scissors and glue so they can stick on extra decorations like paper, pictures out of magazines, photos, feathers, shells and other small items. Have a collection of stickers they can use too.

Potato Stamps

You can make potato stamps by simply cutting a potato in half, then using a knife cut out a shape into one side of the potato. You will probably have to do this part for them, but once this is done you dip the potato shape into some paint and print pictures onto the paper.

Baking

There are plenty of easy recipes that children can follow themselves. Baking cupcakes is easy and then you can have fun decorating them anyway you wish. Chocolate Crackles are another easy treat as well as Honey Joys.

Reading

While you are cooking dinner is a good time for any children who are in primary school to read their library books or readers to you. Often in the rush of the evening you can forget to do it but you can kill two birds with one stone if they sit in the kitchen and read while you cook.

Without a doubt the most popular soft plush toys back then were teddy bears and sock puppets. People are drawn towards plush animals for many different reasons. There are people that collect small plush toys and big plush toys. They keep them through childhood and give them to their own children when they are old enough to appreciate them. Who has not had a teddy bear or one of the many plush dog toys when they were a child?

Plush toys are often thought of as a gift for important events in a loved one’s lives. When a child graduates from school, any holiday, birthdays, anniversaries or just when you want somebody to have a good day. I can remember when my parents gave me and my brother horse plush toys. We thought they were the greatest toys ever. I dragged that horse around for a few years. It was my “safety blanket”.

So popular are plush toys that large companies make lots of profits from them. You know when Disney, Ty, and Steiff are in the business then the business is big. And if you have walked through a shopping mall lately then you have surely seen the Build A Bear Workshop.

The teddy bear plush toy is the softest of soft. It is stuffed with the softest of cotton and will have baby bottom soft fur on the outside. There is no other plush toy that is as popular as the teddy bear. A lot of people think that puppy plush toys are popular, but they really can’t compare with the king of stuffed animals, the bear.

Just like I did most children around the world will have a plush toy in their room or more likely several scattered around the house. We have all heard of baseball cards becoming collector items just like stamps and coins. It is too bad because it takes the joy out of having these items. It all becomes a financial thing. It is sad that the teddy bear is traveling down this same path.

The Super Bowl for the teddy bear is Valentines’ day. It is given by many men to their girlfriends or wives. And this is a gift that always brings a smile to the ladies faces.

We have President Roosevelt to thank for the teddy bear’s name. Teddy Roosevelt that is. This is how the story goes. In 1902 the President was on a hunting trip with the Governor of Mississippi. Roosevelt joined the Governor and several other men on the expedition. After a while most of them had already shot an animal. Everyone that is except for President Theodore Roosevelt. Fearing that the President would be embarrassed about being the only one that did not succeed at the hunt, the group captured a Black Bear and tied it to a tree. They had the President come over to the tree and told him to shoot the bear.

Roosevelt would not shoot the bear. If nothing else the President was a sportsman and knew that it would not be fair to shoot a bear that was tied to a tree. The whole incident was written up in the newspapers. The story went viral and the bear that was tied to the tree gained the nickname of “Teddy Bear” named after Teddy Roosevelt.

There are now companies that produce collectible bears. These designer plush toys can be found in any toy store or on the internet. Steiff is the largest manufacturer of these types of plush toys. China and Indonesia are where most bears are produced. But is there any more famous teddy bear than the Born In America, Winnie-the-Pooh?

We might ask ourselves how children went from wanting a cute plush bunny and plush dogs to craving  rpg games and dungeons and dragons.  I’m not sure how that happened but it has.  Many kids now a days are not interested in simple toys.  Perhaps the only time you can interest them in a simple toy is if it is one of the anime plush toys or one of the Nintendo plush toys.  I guess times change and so do games and toys.

When all is said and done, despite the advent of high tech toys, I believe that  plush toys will remain a popular gift for young and old.  And that plush toys will always be loved by young children.

There are a few good ways to introduce them into the world of RPGs. First, if you already play board games with friends, games like Risk, Arkham Horror or Settlers, then the strategy aspects of RPGs might already hold enough appeal. A good gateway game might be D&D Miniatures. It’s a two-player strategy game that has elements of chess, Risk and Magic the Gathering. An added bonus is that in RPGs, you usually use Dungeons and Dragons miniatures as “board” pieces. The minis are inexpensive and very detailed making them easy and fun to use in your game.

If your friends are writers or read fantasy novels, books like “Lord of the Rings”, “Game of Thrones” or Robert Jordan’s “Wheel of Time” series, then a game like D&D will allow them to “live” within a world not unlike what they’ve experienced in the novels. I often describe RPGs as being shared storytelling. That aspect should appeal to your fantasy loving friends.

Finally, if your friends enjoy video games then RPG Games will give them a nice change of pace from sitting in a darkened room holding a controller. The mechanics of RPGs are similar as in video games, but you have to do the math yourself. As in video games, your character has stats and health points and particular skills. For example, playing a game like Fallout3 is not so different from playing D&D.

First impressions matter, so if you’re setting up a little D&D adventure to introduce your friends to the game, make sure you take the time to plan it out. RPGs are so much better with props. D&D props like a torn piece of paper with writing on it or a small bag filled with “gold” coins will really bring the story home. Before you know it, you and your friends will be having a blast.
