Company Use. China has very strict public information controls – not to mention constant domestic content creation and dissemination by the People’s Party of China. We should never doubt the extent of being monitored by police and Communist Party members while we are in Mainland China. Your computer repairs supplier is probably installing software and other devices to directly link your computers to Police and military security agencies, for example. There are more than several monitoring agents assigned to each foreigner that enters the country. This does not mean 3 people will follow you from entry. Your cleaning lady will be hired to snitch on you while you are in the hotel, for example.

Example Expatriate Monitoring Levels. Before the Beijing Olympics in 2008, just about all foreigners who had stayed in the country on F (business) visas for more than 3 months (easily bought in Hong Kong), and the majority of foreigners who were overstayed in China, we rounded up in a matter of weeks, and all asked to leave the country. There was no way this could have happened if they did not know where to find them all, because it was many thousands who had been working in China this way for many years. Technically, they were not breaking the law on F visas, if they were not being paid in China. F visas were cancelled and many other visas were rejected for the event.

Use a VPN in China with real care. It will be necessary to get access to the majority of the Internet. Your usual Windows terminal emulator will probably not be able to connect back to your company mainframe. You will not be able to see so much information while in China (including many missing emails – after being sifted for semantics and terminology 3 times), you will not know what is going on in the rest of the world before too long.

• Online Study. Online study is an excellent way to support or provide language teaching and learning. Language learning requires repetition and regularity. For example, you might not be able to attend a class everyday, but you will have one hour at home you can add classes to those days you cannot attend your language school.

• Watching Movies. If you ever want an excuse to sit in front of the TV, then learning another language is the best one around. Subtitles, as long as they are of good quality, are one of the easiest ways to listen to a language and read the meaning at the same time. Language learning should be fun and something you enjoy. I sit on the subway using my business mobile to watch movie downloads. I don’t feel like I am learning. If you do not know the context, it would be harder for you to understand, what others are saying in your second language.
