Is there really such a thing as Free Cars? The short answer is no. The long answer is maybe, kind of sort of. The reality is that nothing is free.
Charities used to make appeals for free used cars so that they could refurbish them, get them running, and then give them to people who couldn’t afford them This was actually a good way of getting rid of a car and helping people in need at the same time. Unfortunately the government program, Cash For Clunkers, destroyed all of the old cars. Now poor people are just out of luck.
Free old cars are just a memory now. Automobiles have become so expensive that giving one away is extremely hard to do unless you are wealthy. About the closest people are going to get to free transportation is probably free pictures of cars. Not really funny if you need a car to get to work or the doctor.
I’m not really sure why people think they should have cars for free. It might be part of our entitlement society. But like I always say, “There is no free lunch.”
I think back in the 1920’s or 1930’s if a Hollywood star was in a big movie they would be given free movie cars. In other words the car that appeared in the movie would be given to the star for publicity purposes. The studios really did give away free classic cars. Can you imagine them doing that today? I don’t think it would ever happen.
The only place I have ever known to tempt you with free new cars are the casinos in Las Vegas. You win the jackpot and get a car. Of course all of the gamblers who lose are really paying for the car…but don’t tell anybody. It is slight of hand…free cars for sale.
If you work for a company that makes you drive around a lot they may give out free business cars. This really isn’t unusual because it is a write off and quite the perk.
But all in all I do think that free cars are a thing of the past. They are just too expensive and most people are going to keep them, trade them in, or pass them over to a relative or a friend. Perhaps that is the only time free cars will ever see the light of day.
