Getting a job in the telesales sector can be very rewarding indeed. It is of course hard work and can be tricky to pick up when you first start, but if you put in the hours you’ll find you get satisfying work experience.

Telesales roles usually have a typical daily structure; you’ll have a list of contacts you need to get on the phone and will work your way through it. Whilst speaking to the contact, you’ll typically have to explain and sell the product, amongst other things. These include typing up notes about the conversation, giving personalised advice to your contact, asking them if they’d like to undertake a trial period and perhaps accepting orders.

It’s fast-paced work; you really only have a minute or so to convince someone to stay on the phone. This means you need to learn how to capture people’s attention within the first 30 seconds, otherwise they’ll politely decline and ring off. Also, it can be quite intense as not everyone will be pleasant when you speak to them. The trick is to learn how to be assertive yet polite with them, so as not to burn any future bridges.

In telesales, you’ll typically work anything from 35-40 hours each week. You may work set hours or you may not; it really depends on the company for whom you’re working. Some will employ shift patterns in order to ensure productivity is as high as possible.

Although there are no fixed qualifications you need to enter telesales, there are some personal attributes you’ll need to demonstrate. These include a friendly persona, a good ear for listening, an optimistic outlook towards life and a flexible nature.

You’ll also have to show where you’ve worked with the public in previous jobs, or where you’ve worked in sales. If you feel you can handle all of the above, and have the right personality, then there’s nothing stopping you getting into telesales.
