Most people who are overweight have become so because of several different factors. A lot of people just eat too much. Some people eat because they are sad, other people eat because they are surrounded by food in their workplace, or more commonly, people just have a natural tendency to put on weight as they get older. Another reason for putting on weight is lack of exercise. The equation of burning the same amount of calories as you are taking in applies just so that you can maintain the same weight. As you get older, the rate that your metabolism burns calories tends to slow right down. This means that you will have to do a bit more to help your body burn off the extra calories. This is called exercise.
